The Grimaldi Group expands its fleet with Grande Svezia, the new 9,000 CEU car carrier that combines record cargo capacity with cutting-edge green technologies for environmental sustainability. Measuring 220 meters in length and 38 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 91,611 and a cruising speed of 18 knots, the vessel is the second of ten units commissioned from China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu, following the recent delivery of her sister ship Grande Shanghai.
Grande Svezia is designed to transport both electric and fossil-fuel vehicles, meeting the needs of a rapidly transforming automotive industry. With 14 decks and advanced design, it represents a new benchmark for sustainable maritime transport. The vessel is the fourth Ammonia Ready ship in the Grimaldi fleet, capable of being converted to use ammonia as an alternative, carbon-free fuel.
Onboard, a range of innovative green features stand out: 5 MWh lithium mega-batteries to eliminate emissions while at berth, a cold ironing system to receive shore-side power, 2,500 square meters of solar panels, silicone coatings to reduce drag, and smart ventilation and air-conditioning systems. Its electronically controlled engine is equipped with devices that drastically cut SOx, PM, and NOx emissions, fully compliant with strict TIER III limits.
Among the most innovative features is the installation of the gate rudder, a twin foil rudder never before fitted on PCTC vessels, designed to increase propulsion efficiency and maneuverability. The optimized hull design, air lubrication systems, and class notations such as Green Plus, Green Star 3, Comfort Vibration, and Comfort Noise Port confirm the vessel’s excellence and eco-friendly credentials.
According to the Group’s data, Grande Svezia consumes 50% less fuel compared to previous generations of car carriers. This achievement reinforces the commitment of CEO Emanuele Grimaldi to modern, eco-friendly fleets: “Through this investment, we want to continue supporting the global automotive industry with ships that are increasingly efficient, advanced, and environmentally sustainable,” he stated.
The vessel’s name is a tribute to Sweden, a country regularly served by the Group for over three decades and home to its privately managed port in Wallhamn. After her presentation in Naples, Grande Svezia will embark on her maiden voyage along the East Asia – Persian Gulf route, carrying 3,100 vehicles and 5,800 linear meters of rolling cargo, including buses, trucks, trailers, and industrial machinery destined for Gulf markets.
