The Grimaldi Group has officially taken delivery of the Grande Shanghai, the first of ten next-generation Pure Car & Truck Carriers (PCTCs) built at China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu. This cutting-edge vessel boasts a capacity of 9,000 CEU (Car Equivalent Units), reduced fuel consumption by 50% compared to the previous generation of car carriers, and the Ammonia Ready class notation, certifying that it can be converted to run on carbon-free ammonia fuel. With this milestone, the Naples-based group confirms its leadership in sustainable international shipping.
The Grande Shanghai represents a major technological step forward in the global car carrier sector. Designed in collaboration with Knud E. Hansen, the ship measures 220 meters in length and 38 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of over 91,600 tons and a service speed of 18 knots. Its 14 decks can accommodate both electric and traditional vehicles, making it a flexible and eco-efficient asset for the automotive logistics industry.

The vessel has been awarded the Ammonia Ready notation by the Italian Naval Register (RINA), along with further class notations such as Green Plus, Green Star 3, Comfort Vibration, and Comfort Noise Port, highlighting its top environmental and comfort standards. Onboard, state-of-the-art technology includes 5 MWh lithium mega-batteries, cold ironing capability for zero emissions at berth, 2,500 square meters of solar panels, silicon-based hull coatings, and smart HVAC energy-saving systems. Its electronically controlled engine features advanced exhaust gas treatment, reducing SOx, particulate matter, and NOx below TIER III levels. Further innovations include Air Lubrication, optimized hull design, and the pioneering gate rudder system, installed for the first time on a PCTC, improving propulsion efficiency and maneuverability.
“The Grimaldi Group reaffirms its active and determined commitment to the ecological transition of shipping,” stated CEO Emanuele Grimaldi, underlining how investment in alternative fuels such as ammonia is a strategic choice to guarantee quality, efficiency, and sustainability in maritime transport.
The Grande Shanghai will make her maiden voyage in September on the East Asia – East Africa service, launched last June, calling at Taicang, Mombasa, and Dar es Salaam. In the future, the vessel will also be deployed on routes between East Asia and Northern Europe, further strengthening the group’s global network.
With a fleet of more than 130 ships and around 20,000 employees, the Grimaldi Group is today one of the leading players in maritime transport, combining technological innovation, advanced logistics, and environmental sustainability. The Grande Shanghai is not only a new flagship but also a symbol of the green transition shaping the future of international shipping.
