At the headquarters of the Campania Aerospace District (DAC) in Naples, Leonardo hosted the workshop “Tools and Strategies for a Sustainable Business”, focused on the evolution of the aerospace supply chain towards responsible and future-oriented models. The event highlighted Leonardo’s comprehensive vision for the sector, emphasizing environmental, digital, and social transformation through active involvement of SMEs – the true engine of Italy’s manufacturing fabric.
Paolo Rostirolla, Vice President of Sustainable Supply Chain at Leonardo, presented the company’s commitment to integrating ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria across procurement processes and the entire value chain. The goal is to provide tangible support to suppliers on their path toward sustainability and carbon reduction, ensuring shared growth and long-term value creation.
As part of its 2025–2029 Industrial Plan, Leonardo aims to reach €24 billion in revenues by 2029, leveraging advanced technologies, digital transformation, and a more sustainable production network. Key initiatives already underway include involving 58% of suppliers (by emissions) in science-based decarbonization plans validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), training over 500 strategic suppliers on ESG topics, and incorporating ESG criteria into 70% of new procurement tenders.
Concrete tools are also part of this roadmap. Leonardo has adopted EcoVadis to monitor and assess supplier sustainability performance and launched the Green Sustainable Supply Chain program, which offers Italian SMEs free access to modules on GHG accounting, climate target-setting, and personalized coaching.
As Rostirolla explained, more than 50% of Leonardo’s carbon footprint comes from upstream in the supply chain. That’s why the company is working closely with industrial partners and regional clusters like DAC to build a resilient, sustainable ecosystem based on collaboration and innovation.
Luigi Carrino, President of DAC, reaffirmed the District’s commitment to supporting sustainable development in the regional aerospace ecosystem, facilitating open dialogue among major players, SMEs, institutions, and financial actors. Carrino highlighted that SMEs are increasingly pressured to embrace ESG principles—not only to meet regulatory expectations, but to boost competitiveness, efficiency, and brand reputation. The DAC stands as a platform for strategic discussions, shared challenges, and long-term transformation.
The workshop underscored the value of collective action and territorial cooperation in achieving a sustainable, digital, and inclusive aerospace industry in line with Europe’s green transition goals.
