The 38th edition of the America’s Cup will take place in Naples in the spring-summer of 2027, transforming the Gulf into a global sailing arena and driving forward the redevelopment of Bagnoli. The official announcement came during a thrilling press conference at Castel dell’Ovo, attended by Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi, President of Sport e Salute Marco Mezzaroma, and Grant Dalton, CEO of Team New Zealand, current holders of the trophy.
This marks a symbolic and energizing return: Naples previously hosted stages of the Cup with the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2012 and 2013. But this time it will host the main event – the world’s oldest and most prestigious sailing competition. The race course will be set along the Naples waterfront, while team bases and operations will be located in Bagnoli, the focus of an ambitious urban transformation plan.
Mayor Manfredi described the Cup as “the most inclusive and open ever,” placing not only sailing at the center, but also social and territorial development. The event will be the catalyst for Bagnoli’s long-awaited renewal, with work on piers, coastline stabilization, public sea access, and a vast green park. Manfredi emphasized that Naples, a city of the sea and the people, will solidify its status as one of the world’s top maritime and tourist capitals.
Minister Abodi highlighted an “estimated economic impact of one billion euros” and noted that Naples was a natural and strategic choice. The government is also considering the creation of a “free zone” in Bagnoli, with tax benefits to attract international investment.
Grant Dalton, CEO of Team New Zealand, fondly recalled the warm welcome received in past visits and praised Luna Rossa as a formidable opponent and potential finalist. “We’re thrilled to bring the Cup here after 174 years. Naples has won our hearts,” he stated.
The event will also showcase the city’s modern and sustainable face. Castel dell’Ovo is already undergoing accelerated restoration, and the entire coastal stretch from Pietrarsa to Bagnoli will be reimagined as a green, connected urban corridor with lasting infrastructure for both residents and visitors.
Marco Mezzaroma, president of Sport e Salute, praised Naples’ rise as a sporting city and underscored the need for “precision, professionalism and punctuality” in the organization.
This international recognition for Naples is twofold: not only will it host the most prestigious sailing event, but it follows the city’s euphoric celebration of its fourth football championship, symbolizing a cultural and civic rebirth. The America’s Cup 2027 will become a turning point in Naples’ identity and infrastructure, leaving a legacy for generations.
