Space is no longer just the realm of exploration—it is now a vital frontier of sustainable innovation. At the latest edition of Innovation Village (July 10, 2025), Campania confirmed its leading role in Italy’s and Europe’s growing Space Economy, with a cutting-edge focus on Space Manufacturing: the production of materials and technologies directly in orbit, under microgravity conditions, for both space and Earth-based applications.
According to Luigi Carrino, President of the Campania Aerospace District (DAC), the Space Economy is expected to grow by 30% annually in the coming years. This ambitious forecast is reinforced by two major developments: the gradual dismantling of the International Space Station by 2030 and the increasing involvement of American private companies in orbital operations. As noted by Colonel Aniello Violetti, space attaché at the Italian Embassy in Washington, these changes are paving the way for a new era of orbital infrastructure and permanent research laboratories that could transform science, industry, and everyday life.
In this rapidly evolving context, Campania is positioning itself as a strategic partner for major global space players, thanks to its robust scientific, industrial, and technological ecosystem. A concrete example is SACS (Satellitar Analyses on Cellulose for Space), a project launched by Knowledge for Business and Space Factory, a Naples-based startup led by Norberto Salza, which develops reentry technologies and next-generation orbital labs. SACS focuses on testing the production of bacterial nanocellulose in space—an entirely bio-based, sustainable material derived from renewable sources with wide-ranging applications in medicine, sensor development, and advanced materials. The project’s core is the MiniLab, a spaceborne lab designed to analyze growth conditions, measurement techniques, and sensor development in orbit.
Microgravity enables experiments that are impossible on Earth, offering promising advances in medicine, such as the discovery of new antibiotics and novel treatments for osteoporosis and polycystic ovary syndrome. This progress stems from a fruitful collaboration between academia and industry, as demonstrated by the work of Paolo Netti (IIT), Claudia Esposito (ASI – Italian Space Agency), and Antonio Viscusi (Universitas Mercatorum and University of Naples Federico II), who shared encouraging results during Innovation Village.
The message is clear: innovating in space means improving life on Earth. With vision, expertise, and strong public-private synergies, Campania is ready to lead the next space race—not as a spectator, but as a scientific and industrial protagonist.
